From San Jose International Airport, Playa Chiquita is approximately 4½ hours by car or bus. There are several options available to get to Tierra de Sueños.

Bus

Costa Rican Bus Service - MEPE

The most cost efficient, commonly used option is MEPE, which is the national bus line that runs all over Costa Rica, carrying many travelers to Puerto Viejo hotels.

There are five direct buses from San Jose to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca from the Terminal Caribe at 6am, 10am, 12 Noon, 2pm and 4pm. The buses are fairly comfortable and cost approx. $9 per person.

It is recommended, if possible, to purchase your bus tickets in advance as they sometimes sell out or are standing room only (seats are reserved at time of purchase). If you want to come straight to the Caribbean from your flight, consider booking the airport pickup and bus ticket service which includes pre-purchased tickets for your desired bus departure and a taxi to meet you at the San Jose airport who will bring you to the Caribe bus station.More info / Reserve

Shuttle

Costa Rican Shuttle Service

There are several tourist shuttle companies that pick you up at your hotel in San Jose, or elsewhere, and drop you off at our Puerto Viejo hotel door. More info / Reserve or see the full national combined schedule of the shuttle companies.

Private Driver

Costa Rican Drivers

If you would like a private driver, say if you need to come straight from the airport, pick-up times are more flexible. This option is, however, more expensive. We have used a reliable shuttle service which is about $190 each way. Just send us a note if you would like us to help coordinate or click here for prices & reservation and choose the “Private” service.

Car Rental

Costa Rican Car Rental

Renting a car is another option. Try EuropCar Rentals or Hola Car Rental.

Since there are no street signs in San Jose, or anywhere, we recommend getting a GPS.

While having a car gives you more mobility, driving in Costa Rica can be stressful. Check out these tips on driving in Costa Rica and other travel advisories.

You can view two popular driving routes to Puerto Viejo on our affiliate Puerto Viejo Satellite website, which also features a Google-Map interface of the area.

River Rafting

Costa Rican River Rafting

Feeling adventurous? Take the Pacuare river rafting trip and get dropped off right at our doorstep! The rafting tour operators will pick you up in San Jose in the morning, take you on a four hour rafting trip with breakfast and lunch included and then drop you off at Tierra de Sueños at the end of the day.
